PSHE, SMSC and Fundamental British Values
At Brunts Academy, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. The PSHE curriculum gives children the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive lives, to be respectful members of society and to meet their full potential.
By teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, and by building self-esteem and empathy, we aim to ensure our programme will tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and improve the life chances of all of our pupils. PSHE education also helps pupils to develop skills and aptitudes - like teamwork, communication, and resilience, which are crucial to navigating the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and are increasingly valued by employers.
Our programme is delivered through an online platform called Wellio. This is delivered every week through an extended tutor time. The PSHE programme is then tailored to suit the needs of our learners within the context of our community. All resources are age appropriate for each year group. If there are any resources that you would like to see from the mapping documents, then please contact the PSHE Coordinator - mhackett@bruntsacademy.org and she will be happy to explain the content and show the resources provided by Wellio.
There are many elements that are taught under the PSHE umbrella; these are:
- Relationship, Sex, Health Education (RSHE)
- Careers and Employability skills
- Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural (SMSC) elements
- Modern British Values

How to request to withdraw a student from sex education.
Requests for withdrawal Sex Education should be put in writing using the form below. This needs to be addressed to the Principal, who will then arrange to speak with parents and carers to explore their views and ensure that the nature and purpose of Sex Education is understood. A written record will be kept of this discussion.
Except in exceptional circumstances, the school will respect a parent’s right to excuse their child up until three terms before a pupil’s 16th birthday when the child can choose to be included in Sex Education. The process above is the same for pupils with SEND; however, in exceptional circumstances, the Principal may take account of a pupil’s specific needs arising from their SEND when deciding whether to agree to a withdrawal request.
A copy of withdrawal requests will be placed in the pupil’s educational record. The Principal will discuss the request with parents and take appropriate action. Staff will plan appropriate, purposeful education for pupils who are withdrawn from sex education.
Please complete the form below, if you still wish to withdraw your child from the sex education aspects that are taught in term 2, under the Relationships unit in the PSHE curriculum. The form needs to be addressed to the Principal
